Our choir
We are a friendly non-auditioning SATB adult choir, rehearsing once a week in term-time. Our repertoire is wide and varied; classical, jazz, folk, gospel, popular, and sacred. As well as giving regular performances in York, we take part in international music festivals around the world. We enjoy supporting local charities such as Jessie's Fund, York Food Bank, and St Leonard's Hospice.
Our members come from across the city of York and we have a range of ages and abilities. As a community choir we welcome everyone regardless of previous singing experience and musical ability.
I'm Buffy Breakwell and I've been a music teacher in York for over 20 years. In September 2015 when I was at Hempland Primary School, a group of parents asked me to start a choir for them as they noticed how much fun the children were having singing, and they wanted to experience it for themselves. So our Community Choir was born. We started with just 7 of us, and we've grown to over 50! We've happily expanded to welcome members from across York, though we have kept our roots in Heworth, close to where it all started.
As an advocate of community music-making, I also run several other choirs in York as well as music ensembles and events. To find out more about my activities, click here.
